    Our Testing Methodology

Every process on this site comes from Just Jump USA's real-world field work — the same documented procedures our own technicians follow — not from manufacturer FAQs or rewritten competitor articles. Here is the process, step by step.

    01

    CCA-based equipment matching

We verify that the jump source — another vehicle or portable starter — meets or exceeds the dead battery's CCA requirement before every jump.

    02

    Battery state diagnosis

We test voltage, load response, and cranking behavior to determine dead vs bad before choosing a process.

    03

    Equipment verification

For portable jump starters, we measure actual cranking amp output against manufacturer-claimed peak amps under real load conditions.

    04

    Safety-first connection protocol

Our cable order follows SAE standards and accounts for hydrogen gas venting — the reason you never ground to the dead battery terminal.

Just Jump USA® technician running a battery diagnostic before a jump start

What you're watching: a diagnosis, not a guess

Before a single clamp goes on, watch as our technician measures the battery's resting voltage — in this call it reads just 5 volts. Anything under roughly 6 volts tells us two things: the battery is genuinely dead enough that a jump start is warranted, and the car's security system will be the first thing to re-engage the moment power is restored.

Next, watch as he physically checks that every connection is tight and secure, because a loose terminal can mimic a failed jump. Then watch the meter climb from 5 volts back up to a full 12 — that's the moment captured on video.

At 5 volts, the immobilizer can't disengage, so the car ignores the key fob. Once full power returns, watch as he immediately unlocks the car with the fob to disable antitheft mode before it can trap the vehicle. When the doors respond again, he already knows the jump start will succeed — before the customer ever gets back in.

This is what a structured process buys you: nothing about this call was a guessing game. And if a jump start ever appears to fail — as it often does with companies that just connect cables and hope — our process lets us troubleshoot the process itself and pinpoint exactly where things went wrong, instead of shrugging and handing the problem back to you.

    What We Do Differently

    CCA-First Methodology

Every guide starts with your battery's Cold Cranking Amps rating. Without this number, you're guessing — and guessing is why most jump starts fail.

    Dead vs Bad Diagnostics

We're the only service company that teaches the difference between a dead battery and a bad battery — and gives you a completely different process for each.

    Safety-First Cable Order

Visual cable diagrams show the exact 4-clamp connection order AND the disconnect sequence most guides leave out entirely.

    Real-World Testing

We test portable jump starters against their rated specs. Peak amps vs actual cranking amps — because the number on the box isn't always what you get.

What you're watching: the same process, every time — and why it matters

Watch closely from the start: before any clamp touches the battery, the technician checks that the connections are tight and secure, then measures the battery's resting voltage. Connecting power prematurely — before that reading — would mask whatever underlying problem is actually there.

The battery reads slightly weak, so watch what he does next, exactly the way our published process says to: he brings the battery up to a full 12 volts, then has the customer start the car. But watch — he doesn't stop when the engine fires.

With the car running, keep your eye on the meter as the voltage holds at 12, then steadily slides: 12… 11… 10… 9. A healthy charging system should hold above 12.6 volts while running, preferably 13 to 14.2. That downward slide tells him immediately the charging system isn't charging at all.

Then watch as he walks straight to the alternator and sees the answer with his own eyes: the serpentine belt isn't even attached to it. The alternator isn't functioning, period. When he tells the customer, he says another company had jumpstarted the car earlier and told him it was completely fine.

That's the whole story in one call. A jump start with no diagnosis sends you down the road believing you're okay — until the car dies again, because the real problem was never found. Our structured process doesn't just restart your car; it verifies your car's charging system is actually holding voltage before we call the job done. When something's wrong, you hear it from us on the spot — not from a dead battery on the interstate an hour later.

Most jump start guides are written by people who've never held a set of cables.

After more than a decade and over 50,000 professional jump starts — across every make, model, battery type, and weather condition — our Just Jump USA® teams noticed the same pattern: drivers following online guides that were technically wrong.

Wrong cable order. Wrong diagnosis. Wrong equipment for the battery's CCA rating. The guides that rank on Google are mostly written by content teams at auto parts retailers or generic how-to sites. They've never dealt with a 900 CCA diesel battery at –10°F that won't turn over.

Our teams have. Thousands of times.

That's why Just Jump USA® publishes JumpMyCar.com — to put the same field-tested information our technicians use every day in front of drivers who want to do it themselves — the right way, the first time.

Just Jump USA® is a local service company — and the first of its kind.

Just Jump USA® is not an app, a call center, or a membership club. It's a local service company: our own trained, uniformed technicians come to your car — at home, at work, or wherever you're stranded — and take care of the problem on the spot.

In the markets we serve, that means professional jump starts, mobile battery delivery and installation with warranty service on the batteries we install, and — through service contracts in some markets — specialized roadside assistance for fleets, campuses, and organizations.

    No membership required

You never join anything. There are no subscriptions, no annual fees, and no waiting on hold with a call center — you pay for the service when you need it, and we come to you.

    Structured processes and procedures

Every service call follows a documented, field-tested process — from diagnosis to connection order to battery installation. That structure is why our work is predictable, safe, and backed by a 100% guarantee when the battery is the underlying issue.

    Proprietary jump start manuals

Our service is built on our own manuals, developed over more than a decade and tens of thousands of real jump starts — not borrowed checklists or generic training videos.

    Uniformed technicians

You'll know exactly who's arriving. Every technician wears the uniform, follows the same process, and represents the same standard — whether it's your first call or your fifth.

    Local relationships that drive excellence

Service quality is driven at the local level. Our teams build relationships within the specific markets they serve, and that local accountability is what keeps the standard high.

    100% guaranteed

If the battery is the problem, we can start it — 100% guaranteed. Jump starts are free in most active service areas; check local terms. Battery services are priced separately.

Our own uniformed teams — not a call center.

Built like the trades. Born on the roadside.

Every American town has the same anchors: an HVAC company, a plumbing company, an electrical company. These are essential local businesses — repeat demand, structured operations, technicians in uniform — the kind of companies that grow with their communities and, over time, become lasting businesses that larger firms compete to own.

Just Jump USA® brings that same model to a service that had never been professionalized: the jump start and the mobile battery. Where roadside help today is an app, a call center, or a membership add-on, Just Jump USA® is a true local service company — with our own technicians, our own proprietary manuals, our own documented processes, and real relationships in every market we serve. Nobody built this category before we did.

    Essential and repeat demand

Batteries fail every day, in every market, in every season — the demand never goes away.

    Structured, documented operations

Proprietary manuals and repeatable processes mean the same quality in every visit and every market.

A business that grows with its market

Local teams, local relationships, and new markets opening nationwide — the model scales the way the trades do.

First to partner with colleges and universities

Strategic partnerships at the local level

On campus with one of our college and university partners.

Just Jump USA® was the first jump start and mobile battery service to partner directly with colleges and universities, bringing on-campus service to students, faculty, and staff — right where dead batteries happen most. Those strategic partnerships are a core part of how we enter and serve a local market.

Since then, many companies have tried to copy elements of our business model. None have replicated it — because the difference isn't an app or a van. It's the trained local teams, the proprietary manuals, the documented processes, and the partnerships behind them.

    Editorial Standards

How we write, what we recommend, and why

Every article follows the same standard our technicians follow in the field: give you the correct answer first, then explain why. No filler paragraphs about the history of car batteries. No 2,000-word preambles.

Our content comes from Just Jump USA's own proprietary jump start manuals, automotive electrical engineering principles, and direct field experience — the same documented processes our technicians use on every service call. When we recommend a jump starter, we've measured its actual output — not just repeated the marketing specs.

We use structured data (schema markup) so search engines and AI assistants can accurately extract and present our information. If you found this site through a featured snippet or AI overview, that's by design.
