How to Jumpstart a Car — The Right Way
Connect a portable jump starter (jump box) or jumper cables to your battery and crank. Check the CCA rating on your battery label first — and know whether your battery is dead or bad, because the process is different.
5 Steps to Jump Start a Car
- Find your battery's power number — Look at the sticker on your battery for the CCA rating.
- Connect the red clamp to your dead battery — Attach to the positive (+) terminal.
- Complete the connection — Using a jump starter or another car, complete the circuit.
- Start your car — Turn the key. Keep the donor car running if using one.
- Drive for 20-30 minutes — The alternator recharges the battery while driving.
