How to jump start a hybrid or electric car
Yes, you can jump start a hybrid or EV — but only its small 12-volt battery, never the high-voltage pack. Find the 12V battery or the under-hood jump terminal, connect red to positive and black to a ground point, then press the power button. Never use a hybrid or EV to jump another car unless the manual allows it.
Steps
- Turn the car fully off and find the 12V battery or under-hood jump terminal.
- Connect the red clamp to the 12V positive terminal or jump post.
- Connect the black clamp to the marked ground point or bare metal.
- Turn on the jump starter or donor car, wait 2 minutes, then press the power button.
- Once the dash shows Ready, remove clamps black first, then red.

| Toyota RAV4 / Camry Hybrid | 12V battery under the rear seat or in the engine bay |
| Honda Accord / CR-V Hybrid | 12V battery in the engine bay |
| Ford Escape / Maverick Hybrid | 12V battery in the engine bay |
| Tesla Model 3 / Y | 12V (or 16V lithium) battery behind the frunk panel; follow Tesla's jump procedure |
| Chevrolet Bolt | 12V battery under the hood, driver side |
| Nissan Leaf | 12V battery under the hood |
Locations vary by year — always confirm in your owner's manual.
Common questions
Can you jump start a hybrid car?
Yes. A hybrid's 12-volt battery powers the computers that turn the car on. If it's dead, the car won't start, and jumping the 12V battery fixes it. The high-voltage pack is never touched.
Can you jump start an electric car?
An EV can't be jumped to drive on a dead high-voltage pack, but if its 12-volt battery is dead the car won't power on. Jumping the 12V battery or using a portable jump starter usually wakes it up.
Can a hybrid or EV jump another car?
Most manufacturers say no or advise caution, because their small 12V systems aren't built to crank a gas engine. Check the owner's manual first.
